The Leeds Elementary School Administrators

From the Desk of the Principal: Alan Loman

Happy Fall,

As we come to the end of the first marking period and prepare to begin the second marking period we have an opportunity to evaluate how our students have been progressing and help them set goals. For all of our students to be successful, we need to help them identify areas of strength that they can build upon and areas where they need to grow. An important step in this process are the Parent/Teacher Conferences that will be occurring on November 6 and 9. You should have received an invitation to a conference from your child’s teacher. If you have not had the opportunity to confirm your attendance, please do so as soon as possible. If you need to schedule the conference at a different time, please contact your child’s teacher right away. It is very important that you have the chance to meet and discuss your child’s progress and talk about ways that you can work together to help your child meet with success

The first marking period was a great success for many reasons. A very big part of the credit needs to go to the great work of our PTO.  Under the leadership of Mrs. Diane Rose, Mrs. Heather Rosado, Mrs. B.J. Dillon, and Ms. Tracey Jacob, the PTO provides valuable support to the entire school community. The financial support that the PTO provides makes it possible for us to provide additional materials, equipment, and resources that benefit all of the students. We recently received eight new Presenters (used to project computer images). Purchases like these would not be possible, especially in these tough financial times. Your continued support of the PTO will help us continue to provide high quality programs for the students at Leeds.

Finally, click here to download a copy (.pdf) of our annual budget input form. We are in the beginning stages of developing the 2010-2011 budget. By the end of November, I must submit to the Board of Education my recommendations of how our budget allotment should be used and make requests on improvements to the building and facility. If you follow state politics, you are probably already aware that there have been many cuts to the State Budget and we are in for a very lean fiscal year. As I plan to make my recommendations to the Superintendent, I want to hear your thoughts on what our priorities should be. Please complete and return the form with your child by NOVEMBER 13th and I will use the information to develop my proposed budget. I appreciate your input and, as always, appreciate the tremendous support you continually provide.

Whisner's Words: Assistant Principal George Whisner

Welcome Back!! Now that all students Pre-K through the 5th grade have returned to school, we are underway into the 2009-2010 school year. With the exception of a few tears, Leeds is full of smiles and excitement!

The theme for this school year is “Preparing Tomorrow’s Leaders”. To this end, our vision at Leeds is focused on student engagement—ensuring that every child is an active participant in the learning process in every classroom. This is a vision that our teachers and staff are well-equipped to reach with your children!

What can parents do at home to help promote and reach this vision of student engagement?  I’m glad you asked!  Encourage healthy habits regarding sleep, diet, and exercise. Get involved with your child’s homework (and book bag, you never know what lurks there). Help your student make connections between what they learn in class and how it might be applied to their life outside of school—there are many opportunities for this, get in touch with your child’s teacher for ideas. If you have questions about what your child does in school or something that comes home, do not hesitate to contact the school.  ONLY WHEN THERE IS A TRUE PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN SCHOOL AND HOME WILL WE BE ABLE TO TEACH THE WHOLE CHILD.

Again, welcome back!
